Baroness Neville Rolfe, Minister for Intellectual Property, said:
I am very pleased that the Digital Economy Bill has been introduced today. It includes a number of major intellectual property measures that will help boost our creative industries and protect their hard work.
This government is beginning to deliver on its manifesto commitment to make the UK the best place in Europe to set up a business, innovate and, patent.
The Digital Economy Bill enables everyone to have the right to fast broadband and automatic compensation for consumers when telecoms providers do not deliver as promised. There will also be tougher penalties for nuisance calls.
9 out of 10 homes in the UK can now access superfast broadband but in order to remain ahead of the digital world the UK must have the correct infrastructure in place. The first reading in the Houses of Parliament on the 5th July will secure the building of foundations for the future.
