Businesses struggling to make ends meet can now arrange a deferral of tax payments including corporation tax, VAT, PAYE, income tax and National Insurance Contributions.

Business-owners wishing to apply for the deferral need to call HMRC's Business Payment Support Service helpline, which is available to deal with enquiries seven days a week.

The staff on the helpline will review individual circumstances and discuss temporary options tailored to the needs of the business, such as arranging to make payments over a longer period. Additional late payment penalties on payments included in the arrangement will not be charged, although interest will continue to be payable on those taxes, where it applies.

Whilst this 'grace period' is running, businesses will be able to take advantage of what HMRC is calling the Time To Pay (TTP) service as many times as necessary without additional surcharges. It has not been confirmed how long this grace period is going to last, but it should be available throughout the economic downturn.

Please note: The Business Payment Support helpline is for new enquiries only. If someone from HMRC has already been in touch about an overdue payment, or if you already have a payment arrangement, it is important that you call the original office that contacted you.

When to contact the Business Payment Support Service helpline

If you have payments due now or in the near future, the sooner you get in touch, the better. Don't wait until your payment is overdue.

Time taken to make a decision

HMRC has stated that, in most cases, it should be able to give you a decision in about 10 minutes. For larger payment debts and more complicated cases, it may involve a longer, more detailed discussion.

Information you will need to provide

You will need to have the following information to hand:
  • Your tax reference number
  • Details of the tax that you are or will have trouble paying
  • Basic details of your businesses income and outgoings
