1. Stay calm
This is the first, and most important, thing. You will have to think logically and possibly need to take instruction from a professional, so you will need to keep a cool head.
2. Check the basics
Sometimes the solution is extremely simple. If your computer won't start, check that your PC is connected to the main socket. Is the socket actually switched on? Is the monitor cable firmly connected to the back of the computer? If there is a problem when you start it up, try turning it off and on again, is the problem still there? Often the problem, and answer, is quite obvious and you will be able to sort it out yourself.
3. Listen carefully
Try to identify any peculiar sounds, such as a loud clicking or a rattling noise. These might be symptoms of the underlying problem.
4. Document the evidence
Gather all necessary documents such as receipts, support documents, telephone numbers, and names if possible. All of these are of utmost importance. If you have an IT department, they may have all these.
5. Call after-sales or support
These numbers should be on the documents that came with your hardware or software. Have a piece of paper and a pen ready to take down any useful information.
6. Take notes
Record everything that might be useful, such as the last time you used the computer successfully, any attempts you have made to restart the computer, any burning smell etc.
7. Ask questions You should ask how long it might take to fix and whether you can get a replacement computer until your computer is repaired. Make sure that the data on your computer remains untouched. If your computer will have to be taken away to be fixed, demand a deadline as to when it will be sent back to you.
