Tell-tale signs that you've been hacked

A computer that has suddenly become slow for no apparent reason is one of the most common signs of malware or virus infection. The computer runs slowly because the rogue application uses the computer resources in the background to send infected emails or your data to another computer via the internet.
The following scenarios could be signs that you have been hacked:
  • If your internet connection slows dramatically there is a chance you have been infected with a virus that is sending out data that congests your connection. Or it could be a sign someone is trying to break into your computer from a remote location. Firewalls can repel such intrusions.

  • If your cursor starts moving around by itself or if browser windows open up by themselves and start redirecting to other websites, then you have definitely been hacked. Although sometimes this activity is the hacker "showing off" and announcing his presence, on other occasions it can have very serious implications.

  • If you start to get unexpected calls and mail from companies and people you have not dealt with, your bank details could have been stolen by a hacker. Fraudsters can run up debts and take out loans in your name. Firewalls can prevent hackers from accessing your data to achieve this.

  • If you use the internet without any security tools installed on your computer, or if you use a wireless internet connection that is not password protected your computer system is a ripe target for hackers and can be compromised within minutes.
