The FPB has offered a helping hand to those companies struggling to deal with the recent floods. The FPB, whose helpline is normally reserved for the 25,000 small and medium-sized businesses it represents, has agreed to make the service available to the owners and managers of those businesses now coming to terms with the aftermath of the floods, and the subsequent problems relating to employment law and health and safety.

The FPB's Head of Membership Services, Philip Moody, says the problems that companies are facing are varied.

"We are getting calls on many topics: some want to know if their employees can come back to work if they have no running water, others how to deal with laying staff off. The important thing to stress is that, during this difficult time, we are willing to take calls from companies that would not normally be able to get help from the FPB."

The FPB is concerned that some businesses will be so busy dealing with the impact of the floods on their premises that they may overlook important areas of employment law or health and safety regulation.

Mr Moody said that is where the FPB can help.

"It's about making sure smaller firms, busy with repairs and getting back on their feet, do not fall foul of the rules and regulations in the process. Our support will mean one less problem for them to deal with."

Businesses hit by the floods can contact the FPB's helpline on 0845 130 1722 or via email at helpline@fpb.org.
