Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, is backing a campaign to place small businesses at the heart of the Government's decision-making process. Launched in June by the FPB, the campaign calls for politicians to sign a pledge in support of the smallest firms – those with fewer than 10 employees.

The FPB is calling for a reduction in the burden of legislation which for many firms is a barrier to growth, for a greater understanding of the impact of late payment and a reduction in the lower rate of corporation tax.

Mr Farron,  who has been appointed the Liberal Democrat's new Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "Small businesses in the South Lakes are crucial to our economy and without them our communities would be without a crucial source of jobs. They also provide our towns with a unique character. I am delighted to support the ‘Think Smallest First' pledge and will make sure that my constituents' views are heard in Parliament."

On receiving the MP's signed pledge, the FPB's Chief Executive, Phil Orford, said: "Tim's signature adds even more momentum to our Think Smallest First campaign. Having an MP who stands up for small businesses in his constituency should help in getting the Think Smallest First message heard where it needs to be – Westminster."

The FPB's Think Smallest First campaign was launched in June 2008, and has gained cross-party support from MPs and Ministers. In June 2008, the FPB posted a petition on the Downing Street website, which now has more than 800 signatures from owners of small businesses and members of the public.

Mr Farron first joined the Liberal Democrats aged 16, while still at school. Before entering Parliament in 2005, he worked in higher education. As MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Mr Farron has campaigned against health cuts and for a better education system, as well as championing the cause of rural communities and farmers.

Mr Farron is married and has two sons and two daughters. He supports Blackburn Rovers, plays football himself, and also enjoys walking in the Lake District, listening to music and spending time with family and friends.
