The FPB is calling for a reduction in the burden of legislation, which is a barrier to growth for many firms, and for a greater understanding of the impact that late payment and increases in tax have on smaller firms.
Mr Harvey was elected to Parliament in 1992. He was the Liberal Democrat Party's Transport Spokesman from 1992 to 1994. From 1994 to 1997, Mr Harvey was the Party's Trade and Industry Spokesman, during which time he presented new policies on small businesses. He is currently the Shadow Defence Secretary.
"It is vital that the Government provides greater support for small businesses. They need greater tax concessions and protection from the major chains, which are always squeezing the little guy out," said Mr Harvey. "In rural areas such as North Devon, the constant refrain is local produce is best, so it is vital that we do what we can to support and protect such local suppliers and tradesmen.
Mr Harvey added: "Small firms suffer from a high tax burden, excessive red tape and problems with late payment, all of which are not conducive to them thriving."
On receiving the MP's signed pledge, the FPB's Chief Executive, Phil Orford, said: "Nick Harvey's signature adds even more momentum to our Think Smallest First campaign. Having such an experienced advocate of small businesses will be a great asset to the campaign and I am sure having an MP like Mr Harvey on board will help in getting the voices of small-business-owners heard where they need to be – in Parliament."
The FPB's Think Smallest First campaign was launched in June 2008, and has gained cross-party support from MPs and Ministers. In June 2008, the FPB posted a petition on the Downing Street website, which now has more than 800 signatures from owners of small businesses and members of the public.
Mr Harvey was educated in business studies at Middlesex University and graduated in 1983. He is married, with two children, and enjoys travel, walking and football. |
