Taxation

Taxes are one of the most important responsibilities for any business owner. They pay for the public services we receive, but can be the biggest outgoing figure on the books for many small businesses.

Unfortunately, there are so many twists and turns in the tax system that navigating these can be a real challenge for small businesses. Many small businesses need outside help to ensure that their accounts are in order, but how can those same businesses ensure that the tax environment is right to grow their business?

We provide our members with a voice into the Treasury and HMRC. Taxes are a fact of life, but they shouldn't be a burden.

Our position

  • We want the British tax system to be simple and proportional, cutting down on the hassle associated with taxes and helping to ensure a level playing field among businesses across the UK.
  • We are in favour of a lower rate of corporation tax for small businesses. Lower taxes for most FPB members mean they can invest more money back into the business and create new market opportunities.
  • Business rates are another form taxation, collected and spent at a local level. We are in favour of all eligible small businesses being automatically enrolled to Small Business Rate Relief scheme, and has campaigned to bring the issue to Government attention.
  • We make sure that its members have access to the most up-to-date tax information from HMRC, in order to make the process as simple and as painless as possible.

Latest development

  • July 2009 - The FPB attended the latest meeting of the National Ratepayer's Forum to discussion the 2010 revaluation in non-domestic (business) rates. We will keep our members informed about how they can get their ratings right and what the measures will be for transitional relief.
  • April 22, 2009 – The Chancellor's Budget did not acknowledge our call for an improved economic environment for small businesses, including a lower rate of corporation tax for small businesses. Instead, he has pushed up taxes in areas that may affect FPB members, such as a 50% tax on personal earnings over £150,000 and an increase in fuel duty in September 2009.
