Redundancy procedure template

Redundancy can be a straightforward process, provided that the procedure is correctly followed, but it is so easy to get wrong, and not getting it right could lead to a finding of unfair dismissal.

There has to be a genuine reason for redundancy because it is the employee's job or function that is being made redundant, not the person.

Generally, reasons for redundancy may include:
  • A restructuring or reorganisation
  • A need to reduce overheads because of falling sales or increases in losses (it will be necessary to produce figures to demonstrate such losses)
  • An increase in automation, so that there is no longer any requirement to employ the number of individuals previously employed.
