Setting yourself business goals is a natural part of running a business but often we get caught up in the day to day running of the business that we lose sight of such things.
Remind yourself of what it is that you want to achieve in 2014. What impact do you want to make? What do you want to be different than 2013?
1. Make sure your goal is something you want to achieve, it’s challenging and is realistic. You can clearly see where this goal fits in with the development of your business. If you can’t rethink.
2. Write your business goals down. What is the realistic date in which you would like to achieve this goal by? Avoid saying in 6 months time as this will turn into a perpetual 6 months and the year will have zipped by before you know it. Where will you place this written down goal to remind yourself of it daily? Ask yourself a couple of key questions; How much do YOU want to achieve this goal (perhaps on a scale of 1-10, 1 being not very much and 10 yes this is imperative to the business) What are your/the business reasons for wanting to achieve this goal? What will it give you/the business? What happens if things stay the same? How much control do you have over the success of this goal?
3. Break the goal down. If you were to consider climbing Everest in one go that may be a little overwhelming as you would be focusing on the huge challenge in front of you. If you consider the different component parts that will contribute to you being able to climb Everest and then identify the first component part to focus on in the first instance, this approach will ensure you take steps towards the overall goal and avoid the dreaded procrastination.
4. Remind yourself daily of your goal and the reasons why you want to achieve it.
5. Banish those gremlins! What is likely to get in your way of your success? What has stopped you taking action before? What action are you going to take when the going gets tough? Now let’s consider how you can deal with this. Who can help you? What skills/resources do you have? What have you done in the past when faced with similar obstacles? Start considering your tactics now.
